Foods You Can Eat After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Jul 01, 2022

Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars located in the posterior region of your mouth. Wisdom teeth appear between 17 and 25, and removing them is standard practice. Wisdom teeth might need removal because they are impacted and won’t usually emerge or appear at a wrong angle.

During a wisdom tooth extraction, you receive anesthesia, but many surgeons also use local anesthesia and sedation. If your wisdom teeth haven’t emerged, the surgeon will likely make incisions for the removal. The surgeon might also remove some bone blocking access to the root of the tooth if necessary. After completing wisdom tooth removal, the surgeon cleans the extraction site and applies sutures if required. They also place gauze over the extraction site.

The foods you have after wisdom tooth removal plays an essential role in your recovery. Having soft or liquid foods will not irritate the extraction site and help it heal faster. However, some foods and beverages can irritate or remain trapped in the extraction site resulting in infections. Therefore you must follow your doctor’s orders about the foods you can eat following wisdom tooth removal surgery.

Foods to Eat After Wisdom Tooth Removal

Following wisdom tooth removal and during your recovery, you must start with soft and liquid food. These foods do not require chewing and will prevent pain from developing. You must avoid eating harder foods during this time, as they might damage or get trapped in the extraction site.

Some examples of liquid and soft foods you can have include applesauce, yogurt, smoothies, blended soups and broths, mashed potatoes, ice cream, pudding, and Jell-O.

You find relief from the discomfort when you have cold foods like Jell-O and smoothies. In addition, nutrient-rich foods like soups and broths help promote healing.

As you recover, you can incorporate your everyday foods into your diet using semisoft foods like scrambled eggs, instant oatmeal, and toast before shifting to chicken, fruits, and vegetables.

When Can I Stop Worrying about Dry Sockets?

Dry sockets are a common occurrence that happens when the blood clot in the tooth socket fails to form or gets dislodged. Dry sockets typically occur between three to five days after tooth removal. Dry sockets are treated by the dental office near you by flushing out debris and covering the socket with a medicated dressing.

How Long After Wisdom Tooth Extraction Can You Eat Normal Food?

The Dentist in Gilbert, AZ, recommends not returning to everyday foods soon after having wisdom teeth removed. You can start on scrambled eggs and oatmeal 72 hours after wisdom tooth removal surgery. If you have plenty of pain even after 72 hours, you must delay introducing solid foods into your diet for some more time. However, in most cases, you can get back to your regular routine within seven days following the extraction of your wisdom teeth.

Can I Eat Pasta after Tooth Extraction?

If you must have pasta after wisdom tooth removal, you must ensure you cook it until it is soft and mushy for ease of eating. If you don’t prefer soft and mushy pasta, you might as well refrain from having it until you recover.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid after Wisdom Teeth Removal

Some foods and beverages are better avoided following wisdom teeth removal. Instead, you must stick to the list provided above for the initial few days. You must avoid the following foods and beverages for a week or more until the extraction site heals.

  • You must avoid acidic and spicy foods because they can cause irritation and pain.
  • Alcoholic beverages can also irritate the extraction site besides adversely impacting with the pain medication prescribed by the surgeon.
  • Grains and many types of seeds are also better avoided because of their potential to remain trapped in the extraction site.
  • Challenging to chew foods, including nuts, chips, and jerky, can reopen your sutures to delay your recovery.

You must also avoid smoking on using any tobacco products for at least 72 hours after your surgery because tobacco increases the risk of complications.

Wisdom tooth removal surgery is a straightforward procedure performed on many patients throughout the country. Although you return from the surgeon’s practice the same day, you must exercise caution and refrain from having the foods and beverages restricted by limiting yourself to the prescribed list of foods to speed your recovery.
